Diary of a cyclist

Stevie Keane, Stevie McLaughlin, Maurice Carr and Barry McDonagh who are cycling to Paris for various charities.

Day 1

Croyden to Newhaven. 75 miles

Vietnam veterans Keano & Stocker set an early hot pace to test rookies Carr & McDonaghs stamina. Carr started to lag behind after the 20 mile mark after joining a single female who had her golden labrador Goldie leading the way!! While up front Bazza was doing his best to keep up with Keano but to no avail. Worse was to come as Stocker used all his Nam experience to grind him down on the 65 mile mark. Weather overcast and warm. Late to bed and a 90 mile ride tomorrow, total cyclist 112. More to follow tomorrow.

Day 2

Dieppe to Lisieux. 90 miles

Rainstorms all morning until lunch, everybody soaked through. Rookies Bazza & Maurice showed a big improvement from day 1 finishing the 90 mile alongside the boys. Maurice who got shot down on the first day by Goldie the labrador put all his energies into leading the group to the lunch stop. After the break the sun came out and our group increased with Collie from Armagh, Marty Co Down & Evelyn from Norway hanging onto our tails. Stocker was bombing the level ground but was bogged down on the hills. Keano was cycling ahead of the group to take photos where he caught Maurice holding onto the back of a lorry up a hill!!! Tomorrow 75 miles.

Day 3

Lisieux to Vernon 75 miles

Another wet and windy day to start off with. Stocker set the pace at the front where he was used a a wind breaker to shelter the pack (and a fine job he done) Keano was accused of cutting corners and knocking a mile off his ride and had to spend his lunchbreak riding around a field. Maurice after getting shot down by Goldie on day 1 went to plan B where he stuck a pair of football socks down his shorts to attract the girls! But it backfired badly when all the girls went off screaming and laughing. He was told after that it would have been better if he stuck them down the front . Bazza's backside was suffering from numbness from the saddle and had a near accident we were lead to believe . In all a day of breakdowns, soakings and banter, tomorrow Vernon to Paris 65 miles.

4th & Final Day

Vernon to Paris 65 miles

At last a sunny start to the day as we had a relaxing 65 mile spin to the French Capital. A chance to take a few snaps of the French countryside but Stocker had other ideas with us stopping off at a pub for a beer or 3 with 20 of our fellow cyclist! Maurice & Bazza were hoarse from the karaoke the night before and from being at each others throats from the off. So the final push into Paris, past the Arc De Trimphe, down the Champs e Elessi & finishing under the Eiffel Tower. A job well done with a night in Paris to celebrate.
